A brief chat with Eric Grubbs

Kali ini Baba jamal berkesempatan mewawancarai penulis POST: A Look at the Influence of Post-Hardcore-1985-2007, Eric Grubbs.

PAPA:Hello,mr Grubbs
Eric: good morning!

PAPA:actually in time of my continent it's evening

Eric: it's 5.am here and i'm at work

PAPA:ohh,sorry do i bother you?

Eric:not right now?

PAPA:actually i'm interested about your motivation of writing POST

ERIC:Good Question.

PAPA:Teenager here who identified themselves as emo kids, are debating without proper refference.

ERIC:actually my intention is to write a proper documentation of bands such as Sunny Day Real Estate and Jawbreaker.

PAPA:which in here are called

Eric

Neither am I.

5:17pmPapa

it's much severe than US

5:17pmEric

I can imagine.

5:19pmEric

So, how did you hear about the book?

5:19pmPapa

aren't you tempted to make a documentary as paul rachman and steven blush did

yes i read it from a search in google

actually i also in search of andy greenwald's

5:20pmEric

Gotcha. I'd love to help out on a documentary, but I don't want to make one on my own.

I do want to help make a documentary on Red Animal War, a band from the Dallas area.

5:21pmPapa

recently?

5:21pmEric

They were active from 1999 until 2005, and INCREDIBLE.

5:21pmPapa

they're from deep elm rec right?

and from what i know they who responsible for releasing emo diaries compilation

5:22pmEric

Yes: they released two LPs and one split on Deep Elm.

5:23pmPapa

i see, from the brief review, there's a term art and mathy

5:25pmPapa

from what you've observed what's the motivation of bands like Braid, cap'n jazz, appleseed cast and even red war animal put math rock on their music and considered by media as post hardcore?

sorry if this been an unofficial interview

hehehehe

5:27pmEric

It's all good. I think these bands just were influenced by what they liked, and then journalists looking for a "story" about youth culture did a lot of revisionist history about a lot of things.

This is not the only genre that's received this treatment . . .

5:27pmPapa

hmm i see

also applied on metal and punk right?

5:30pmEric

Yup, and grunge

5:30pmPapa

so about this mutated post hardcore called emo that comes with style and hairdo.why do you think about their attempt of making this simple alternative way of hardcore punk to become today's large populated genre.

i mean community

yes and grunge

5:32pmEric

Because this plays into youth culture, and it sells a lot of merch. :-):-)

5:32pmPapa

few days a go there's a grunge reviva gigs in my city which suggest their audience to wear flannel shirts, jeans and rugged chuck taylor

so its all about the commercialization

but we did'nt see it until the My chemical romance and The used rising up?

why now?

why the 2000?

sunny day were big enough

at the drive in also big enough

5:33pmEric

Frankly, I find it no different than hair metal in the 1980s.

Definitely.

But

5:34pmPapa

hmmmm

5:34pmEric

In terms of mass exposure, a mass audience didn't start caring until Dashboard

5:34pmPapa

so you say this is a product of a culmination

when the pop punk era is over,it's time to search another genre to be exploited?

5:35pmEric

Definitely.

5:35pmPapa

until dashboard yes,but he doesn't apply the pre-designated "emo" style

5:36pmEric

Of course, the music industry/popular musical taste always goes in cycles.

5:36pmPapa

hmm,but why post punk influenced band such as interpol, franz ferdinand doesnt get that much euforia?

they do big in the early 2000?

except the strokes

5:37pmEric

That's an interesting thing:

5:38pmPapa

where youngster who played them applied the so called new york style, with a blazer and a t shirt and a chuck taylor

5:38pmEric

The Strokes appealed more to a college/hipster crowd while Dashboard appealed more to an almost exclusively teenager crowd. Yet ATDI appealed to both.

5:38pmPapa

but it occured in a short period

hmmm

5:38pmEric

Oh yes.

5:39pmPapa

just my opinion, surely if ATDI hang there a bit longer, there would be no such "emo" style

cuz ATDI appealed both

5:40pmEric

Yup. They were that kind of band, but because they broke up, too many reivionsist historians leave them out of their revisionist histories. :-):-)

5:41pmPapa

hmmm

but you put them in your writings hehehehe

i felt that they were also have big influence in the scene

5:43pm

Eric is quite sure the Hold Steady's STAY POSITIVE would not have the same personal impact when it was released last year. We don't get to choose how or why music impacts us. The time is right for now!

5:43pmEric

Oh yes!

Well, sorry to cut this short, but I gotta log off. Work calls.

5:43pmPapa

so is it because the whining and complaining themed song that appeal the teenage fans?so that it becomes prolonged?

thank you

5:44pmEric

If you want to talk more, feel free and send me a chat or an e-mail.

5:44pmPapa

hey can i put this conversation in my blog?

i run a zine

5:44pmEric

Sure!

5:44pmPapa

thanx youre the man

5:44pmEric

Take care!

5:44pmPapa

hope will find yourebooks somewhere here

thanx a lot
